German Pinot Noir (a.k.a. Spätburgunder) is increasingly being seen as an appealing stepping stone between the cerebral elegance of Burgundy and the boisterous fruit of New Zealand, and much of that reputation is based on the quality of wines coming from Pfalz. This one is ripe and spicy, with an elegantly achieved underlying smokiness. Try it with smoked salmon.
