The low-yielding Sagrantino grape, which is native to Umbria, is a reliable option for making plush, juicy reds in the southern Italian style. This example from Tenuta Bellafonte spent 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks and a further two years in bottle to develop characters of dried fruit and exotic spices, with a savoury, smoked nuance. Serve alongside cinghiale (pasta with a wild-boar meat sauce).[Gambero Rosso Italian Wines tasting note not available.] Score – 3 Glasses (out of 3). (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines, 2024)
