Adine is the all-Sangiovese vineyard surrounding the (still in construction) winery, and Punta comes from a specific 2.3ha block, ‘#100’, at around 520m above sea level. Vinified in concrete then aged for around 18 months in large Stockinger casks, this 2017 is floral and earthy with vibrant streaks of tangy red and sweet black cherry, accompanied by some pomegranate and raspberry flavours. Juicy and sapid, with mouthwatering acidity, fine-grained tannins and a bright, stony finish, this is a classy Sangiovese still with a degree of tightness which needs time to unfurl, but it successfully captures the essence of Gaiole: in director Luca Vitiello’s words: ‘acidity, structure, tannins, power.’ Drinking window: 2023-2037. Score – 95. (James Button, decanter.com, March 6, 2023)
