For this Reserva Malbec, Fabre selects grapes from 40-year-old vines planted next to the Vistalba winery, in the alluvial and stony soil on the Mendoza river’s northern bank. Following frequent pump-overs (three times a day) and a year of aging, with 60% of the volume in barrels (all used oak) and the remainder in concrete tanks, the wine offers a succulent and mature expression of the variety, enveloping the palate. Make no mistake, it is not an overwhelming wine; it has acidity and tannins with just enough energy – perhaps ‘light’ is the right word – to illuminate the dark, dense fruit. It offers tremendous value for money.
